With offerings of one all-foam and six hybrid models of varying heights, Custom Mattress Makers lets shoppers customize the length and width of their mattress. Each of the designs can be built with measurements ranging anywhere from 25 to 78 inches in width and 50 to 84 inches in length.
The Largo is the company’s most affordable model. It has a minimalist design, with .75 inches of quilted padding followed by an inch of transition padding and 4 inches of high-density support padding. The Cape has a similar construction but substitutes 4 inches of individually wrapped steel coils instead of the support padding. Both mattresses have a firm (7) feel.
Because these models only range from 5.75 to 6 inches in height and have minimal cushioning and support, we generally don’t recommend them for side sleepers under 230 pounds or people over 130 pounds who sleep on their back or stomach. However, they could be a good fit for people who like a firm sleeping surface or RV owners with limited vertical space.
With respective heights of 8.5 and 9 inches, the Daytona and Clearwater mattresses include 6 inches of Bolsa coils and slightly more robust comfort systems. The Clearwater has 1.5 inches of soft padding for a medium firm (6) feel, while the Daytona has 1 inch of extra firm foam for a firm (7) feel.
While back and stomach sleepers under 130 pounds gave positive ratings for the two beds during our sleep lab tests, the balanced support of the Clearwater clearly outperformed the thinner and firmer Daytona among side sleepers over 230 pounds and back sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds.
The company’s most luxurious mattress, the Cocoa, uses latex in two of its iterations. Available in heights of 9 or 11 inches, the Luxury Firm version rates as a medium firm (6) on our 10-point firmness scale. It has 2 inches of gently conforming Talalay latex and 1.5 inches of plush, gel-infused foam over either 6 or 8 inches of Bolsa coils that are reinforced along the perimeter. The Luxury Plush version of the mattress adds another inch of latex to this combination for a soft (3) feel.
The Luxury Firm version of the Cocoa earned excellent marks from side sleepers weighing more than 130 pounds, back sleepers under 230 pounds, and stomach sleepers under 130 pounds. The Luxury Plush version received the highest praise from side sleepers on our testing team who weigh less than 130 pounds.
The Cocoa also comes in a Luxury Medium version with a medium (5) feel. With a choice of 9- or 11-inch profiles, it features 1.5 inches of gel-infused padding, an inch of copper-infused memory foam, and either 6 or 8 inches of Bolsa coils. Our side sleepers under 230 pounds enjoyed its pressure relief and strong motion isolation, as did our back sleepers under 130 pounds.
In general, Custom Mattress Makers’ beds earned above-average marks from our testing team for temperature control and ease of movement. Mattresses with medium and soft firmness levels rated highest in pressure relief and motion isolation, while the firmer models tended to have stronger edge support.
Custom Mattress Makers lets customers add an additional level of customization with special cuts to the corners of the mattress for an angled, notched, or rounded design. Angled and rounded cuts can help RV owners squeeze mattresses into corner spaces, while notches can accommodate oversized bed posts.
The company notes that its mattresses may have as much as a 1-inch variance in each direction on custom hybrid mattress orders due to the diameter of the coils.
The Clearwater, Daytona, and all three versions of the Cocoa come with a 10-year limited warranty that’s nonprorated for the first five years and prorated thereafter. The Cape has a nonprorated five-year limited warranty, while the Largo carries those same warranty terms for a three-year period. All mattresses are backed by a 100-night sleep trial.
With seven models in varying firmness levels that are made to order in your desired dimensions, Custom Mattress Makers has a mattress solution for nearly any setup.
